A double-edged cut-and-thrust sword, often including a basket hilt which encloses the hand, with a wider blade than a rapier. The basket hilt has a number of variations, including the Walloon hilt and the Sinclair hilt. From the broadsword is descended both the saber and the claymore. The term “broadsword” distinguishes the weapon from various “backswords,” which have only a single edge.
